Viral Marketing Idea for Conor and the Crossworlds by Kevin Gerard

In my radio interview with Kevin on Monday (www.blogtalkradio.com/nikkileigh) we talked about promotion and he mentioned a neat viral marketing idea that he uses and I wanted to share it with you.

This is one of many devious promotion tricks I use to spread the word about Conor.

If you go to Conor's home page - www.conorandthecrossworlds.com - you'll see a banner at the top. It says:

If you click these links in the website, you'll see the Battle Ranks, just as they are listed in the books. There are four warrior levels on either side:

Circle of Evil:
Destroyers
Shadow Warriors
Slayers
Keepers
Council of Seven:
Creators
Champions
Seekers
Guardians

Readers can e-mail me and ask to become part of the Council of Seven or the Circle of Evil. I send them certificates I make myself, and I start them at the bottom level. If they want to rise in the ranks, this is what I tell them. Get one friend to e-mail me and I'll raise you to the third level. Get five friends to e-mail me and you go to the second level. Get ten friends to contact me and you go to the top, either a Destroyer or a Creator, and I make a cool anagram out of their name and put it on the certificate.

It's a cool way to keep readers engaged, and get the friends involved as well.

Blogs - What, Why and How

In the 21st century, it’s no longer optional to have a blog. All authors need to have a blog to promote their books. To get started, you can easily set up a blog on www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com, each of these services offer free blogs and you follow the directions on their sites to start blogging in minutes. Over time you can learn ways to fine tune your blog and to customize the layout or you can hire someone to set up a blog and to teach you the best ways to use that blog to promote.

What is a blog?

Originally a blog was simply a way to communicate with friends. However, blogs are a great way for authors to build a brand and establish a promotional platform for their books. You can use a blog to help potential readers get to know the author behind the book and to learn more about the books you write. Think of it as a cyber sales person who is representing you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What is your cyber salesman saying about you and your books?

How to use a blog?

A blog can include information about your writing, how you write, how you develop story ideas and why you’re qualified to write your books. Non fiction authors can use their blog to build their credibility with potential readers. Take the opportunity to show people that you have something and why you have the background and knowledge to help them. Fiction authors can share insider details about their books, the characters, the setting and many other parts of their books. You can also share writing and promotional tips with others.

Promote your blog.

Just starting a blog is not enough. Once you have a blog and once you start blogging on a regular basis (at least 2-3 short or long blog posts per week), you need to list your blog in blog directories. Two or the many directories include: www.blogcatalog.com and www.Technorati.com . Your blog address should be listed on your author business cards, linked to your website and listed in your email signature block. These are a bare minimum of the places where you should list your blog address. It is also very good to register your blog with www.feedblitz.com or www.feedburner.com and place a subscription block so that interested readers can subscribe to your blog. This means that they will be notified about each of your future blog posts. It’s a great way to stay in touch with interested readers.

This is only the beginning of your blogging journey, but it will get you started and will help you to start getting the word out to your potential readers. If you like the idea of having a blog, but you want to speak to someone about setting up a blog and teaching you how to use and promote it, feel free to contact me for details about my blog consulting service.

Meet The Pilot and Survivor From One of the Largest Air Rescues in Vietnam

In August, Dave Richardson did a virtual tour to promote his book Vietnam Air Rescues. This book was created by a father to share an account of the time he spent in Vietnam. He discusses each of his rescues and shares plenty of details about every day life for him and other interesting tidbits about his time in Vietnam.

Vietnam Air Rescues by Dave Richardson Gives You a Chance to…

Eavesdrop—as a father recounts to his adult children his exploits as an Air Force
“Jolly Green” combat helicopter rescue pilot in Vietnam…

Be There—to see what it was really like…

Ride Along—and determine what you would have done when another man’s life was literally hanging in the balance…

Feel—what it meant to save a life…

Experience—heart pounding action in…Vietnam Air Rescues.

Join author to learn more about his life as a “Jolly Green” rescue pilot, picking up aircrew shot down in North Vietnam and Laos. This book is a real treasure with details of his 7 rescues of 9 men and over 30 anecdotes relating to his experiences. The book is profusely illustrated with more than 100 photos, maps and drawings. To order your copy and for more information, visit his website at www.vietnam-air-rescues.com.

Dave Richardson’s final rescue happened mere days before he was scheduled to return to the US. Little did he know that it would be one of the largest air rescues in Vietnam. The man he rescued has written a book about his experience during this 40 hour ordeal.

While reading The Rescue of Streetcar 304---A Navy Pilot’s Forty Hours on the Run in Laos, you might:

Cry… When Streetcar 304 describes a romantic and emotional farewell with wife and children prior to flying into combat over Laos.

Twinge in Fear… As Streetcar 304 is shot down following his second bomb run in the midst of massive enemy anti-aircraft fire.

Anguish... Along with Streetcar 304 as one rescue plane after another is knocked out of the sky by enemy gunfire and another pilot is also running for his life.

Marvel… At the non-stop action in the jungle as Streetcar encounters squad after squad of enemy troops in hot pursuit and then… lions, leopards and monkeys.

Stand up and Applaud… When Streetcar 304 is finally rescued in a scenario readers describe as “Better than any movie”.

Be in Awe… When you read the final epilogue about the story’s aftermath.

On 31 May 1968, Lt. Kenny Fields catapulted off USS America in his A-7 for his first combat mission. His target was in Laos, which at the time was “officially” off-limits for U.S. attacks. What the planners did not know was that Fields and his wingman were en route to a massive concentration of AAA gun sites amidst an entire North Vietnamese division. Fields—call sign Streetcar 304—was the first to roll in and destroyed the target with a direct hit. Three AAA guns began to fire, but, following his wingman, he rolled in again. This time many more AAA guns opened up and Fields was shot down. For more information, visit – www.kennywaynefields.com

Monday August 18th, author and publicist Nikki Leigh interviewed Dave Richardson about his book and his experiences in Vietnam. To listen or to download your own copy, click the link above.

As a follow up, Nikki Leigh interviewed Dave Richardson and Kenny Fields on August 25th. The second interview was a chance to talk with the rescue pilot and the survivor about what happened during those 40 hours, in the air and on the ground. To listen to the show or to download your own copy, click the link below.

Veterans, teachers, aviation buffs, family members of military personnel, history buffs and many of others enjoyed these shows. They can be a way to start a conversation about the war, help family members understand about their loved ones time in the war, give students a first hand account from the men who lived through this rescue and others and many other people can benefit from these shows.

The content in the shows is just the beginning. To learn the full story from both of these men, read both books and get both perspectives of these pulse pounding experiences and edge of your seat action. Vietnam Air Rescues by Dave Richardson and Rescue of Streetcar 304 by Kenny Fields are both for sale on Amazon.com and other booksellers. You can also order autographed copies from the authors if you prefer. Feel free to contact Nikki Leigh for more information at nikki_leigh22939@yahoo.com. Meet the Promo 101 Tour Coordinators

I thought it would be nice to introduce you to the people behind the scenes. Following you will learn more about what we do.

Nikki Leigh - Tour Coordinator
Owner Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tours & Publicist
Award Winning & Best Selling Fiction & Non Fiction Author

Nikki Leigh began as an idea in a teenager’s mind. At about 14, she wanted to be an author and she wanted to write under the name Nikki Leigh. It took over 20 years, but she eventually “became” Nikki Leigh. She is from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

“I want to convey time, place and character details to my readers. I choose my settings carefully and want people to understand what the setting and history contributes to the story.”

Her love of the coast, history and lighthouses is apparent in her stories. On a trip to Cape Ann with her brother, Chris, she found the location for the Misty Cove series. The rugged land, hard working people and rich history were too compelling to ignore. Cape Ann and Gloucester, Massachusetts are featured in Stormy View, Widow’s Walk (Book One), Lady Lightkeeper (Book Two) and Stormy Shores.

“My first mystery, Lilah and the Locket, is set along the Outer Banks of NC and literally at the base of Cape Hatteras. There is extensive local history and color woven into the story. I did that to help convey the time and place to readers. Other local events will be featured in upcoming books in the Outer Banks series.”

Donna Sundblad -
Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tours - Tour Coordinator
Donna is an editor for a several sites, is a freelance writer and a published author.

Donna Sundblad enjoys life as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She's the eldest of seven and the great-great granddaughter of a Native American named Little Beetle. Little Beetle's people were a blend of Chippewa and Mingo and lived in West Virginia. She decided to leave her culture and took on the name Ida M. Biddle. When she married a white fur trader named Marshall Prickett, their joining was not accepted by either culture, but they forged a new life together.

Donna's love of family, belief in God, interest in her Native American heritage and her love of fantasy and science fiction all influence her writing. Her fertile background shines through her YA fantasy novel Windwalker which opens hundreds of years in the past when the Stygian race welcomes the pale-skinned, diseased-riddled Jonnick to their shores despite prophetic warnings of future harm to the Land and their culture. Neither side is aware of the concealed powers of darkness that disembark with the refugees. Subsequent generations of conflict draw deep lines of division between the two cultures, neither aware that the spirit of the Mage lives within the Jonnick queen.

"What's fun for me," Donna says, "is that both of my fantasy novels came about through following the prompts and exercises found in my creative writing book, Pumping Your Muse."

Her second novel, Beyond the Fifth Gate, due out in September 2008 and features her first female protagonist who races against time to journey though five mystical gates to return to her homeworld to free her people from the bondage of a conquering race of incectoids.

Donna also writes inspirational non-fiction and is published in several anthologies including Life Savors published by Tyndale. Her articles have also appeared in The Writer Magazine, You and Me – America's Medical Magazine, and more. Get Your Feet Wet By Hosting Someone on a Tour

Have you heard about virtual blog tours? If you read the Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tour blog - then you are familiar with the idea, but you might not really understand what happens "behind the scenes". There are several ways to learn more. I have a FREE e-book available for download. The link to download the e-book is in the top left corner of each page of my website - www.nikkileigh.com. There is also a download link on www.virtualblogtour.blogspot.com in the top right corner of each page.

Anyone who is curious about how a virtual book tour works can be a host for other tours. I’m always looking for tour hosts. If you know anyone who would should be added to the notification mailing list about new tours, email nikki_leigh22939 at yahoo.com.

Being a tour host provides promotion for the blog host. If you are looking for a free and easy way to generate some additional traffic to your blog, you should consider being a virtual tour host. Participating will also give people an idea of how part of the tour works. People who are interested, are welcome to contact me for more information.

These are some of the questions I would ask a person who wants to be a blog host. There are always other options, but these ideas will give you some examples of ways a person can host a person during their tour.

• Name and email for the blog contact
• Website or blog address
• E-mail address to send a PDF of the book for the host to read if needed
• How many visitors does the blog get weekly or monthly and their Google page rank
• How many members are on your forum or message board (if using a forum)
• What sort of books or topics does the person want to host – fiction, non-fiction, specific genres or topics?
• Are there are sort of books, products or services would you prefer not to host? If so, what types.
• Do they want to do an interview, a review or something else? (I encourage creativity.)
• Would you prefer a guest host about a specific type of information
• Do you have a place to host a chat and would that be productive for the person who is touring

This is very important -----

I am always hunting for blogs that are not writing oriented. For example, right now, I'm working on tours that focus on:
marketing
promotion
networking
business leadership
coaching
Vietnam air rescue
military family
faith in a battle zone

and much more. For these tours, I'm looking for blogs and blog owners or newsletters etc that discuss these topics. So, if you're interested, but your blog doesn't focus on books - we should still talk. (This list changes monthly, so stay in touch.)

Each blog, newsletter, radio show, forum, website etc that participates in a virtual tour is promoted in the online schedule and in daily promotional posts that are posted on many sites online. This is a free, fun and easy way to meet new people and to promote your site.

Eco-Friendly Book Tour Options

Eco - Friendly Book Tour Options

By Nikki Leigh

Each day we hear that the price of gas has hit an “all time high.” Those words don’t seem to mean much anymore. Unfortunately, any “all time high” will be obsolete within a day or two. We each battle the cost of driving and traveling every day. So, what is an author to do if they want to do a book tour to promote their book?

An Environmentally Friendly Book Tour
The environmentally conscious answer is - a virtual book tour. There are many benefits to a virtual book tour over a brick and mortar store tour. These benefits include:

· Conserve gas
· Save money
· Stay home with family
· No need to leave job in order to tour

We've all had book signings where very few people attended. Sadly, book signings aren't the big attraction they used to be – unless it is a big name author. It can be very expensive and disheartening to plan to book signing and have only a handful of people attend. Does that mean that mid list or small press authors can’t have a successful tour? There is another option. I suggest a virtual book tour or a virtual blog tours.

Define a Virtual Book Tour
A virtual book tour is held on the internet and it includes a series of guest appearances over a certain period of time. These appearances can be on blogs, chats, newsletters, radio shows and Web sites. Each online appearance can include: author information, book excerpts, book summary, book synopsis, a guest post about a topic that relates to the book topic or genre, a guest post about writing, author interviews, character interviews, radio show interviews and much more.

Any author can do a book tour from the comfort of their home. Weather has no effect on a virtual tour. Whether you have two feet of snow in your driveway or sweltering heat, you can still have a virtual book tour. It is critical that you have a computer, an internet connection and electricity - but it can definitely be done.

Find Your Target Audience

I highly recommend that the tour of blogs, radio shows, Web sites, etc are held on sites that have themes which are relevant to the book topic or genre. Writing and reader sites are good choices for part of the virtual tour. Any site that attracts the target audience for the book would be a great place to schedule a tour appearance. I explain this in much more detail when I work with an author to coordinate their tour. The virtual “tour” allows authors to reach many people as they travel through the blogosphere. Many people claim to find the target audience in their tours, but look for proof. Getting in front of the people who are interested in the content and who need your book can be very effective.

What’s holding you back? Do you have a book that you would like to promote? It would be great to get more information about how the tour works and what it could do for you. For more information, feel free to visit the Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tour blog - http://www.virtualblogtour.blogspot.com/. It can be very beneficial to take time to discuss your book promotional goals to see how a virtual book tour can work for you.

FREE Promotional Options For Author

ANY published author is welcome to submit these questions and answers to promote their books. The cover blog always has a long waiting list, but most of the others will allow you to be posted within a few weeks.

To use any of these blogs - click on the link, click on "how to submit" in the top corner of the blog and follow the instructions. I ask that you send the questions and answers as an RTF file. It is also good to send a jpg file of your book cover - no PDF files for the cover art. When you complete the interview, send to nikki_leigh22939@yahoo.com with the blog title in the subject line and I will add you to the list for that blog.

I have divided the blog lists for fiction and non fiction books to make it easier to find the ones you need. I've added several new blogs lately - so if you've been here before - there are some new options.

Two quick updates -

The print edition of Book Promo 101 is complete and available. The print book is oversize 8" x 10" and the layout is gorgeous.

I offer a wide array of promotional services to authors. Feel free to take a look at the possibilities and contact me with questions. If you are interested in something that you don't see listed, let me know and we can talk. For a list of these services visit - www.nikkileigh.com/promo.htm

I offer a wide assortment of virtual book tour options and the current list is located at http://virtualblogtour.blogspot.com/2008/04/virtual-blog-tour-options.html - there are a number of options and price ranges or we can talk about other options.

The Judge the Cover blog and the Start at the Beginning blog usually have a long backlog. I think that’s because these two blogs are the easiest. But, I’ve gotten great feedback from authors who used the other blogs. Those blogs require that the author dig deeper into the creation, the setting, the characters and much more information to complete the interviews.

Details with Christee Gabour Atwood

Tell us the book title and your author name.

Three Feet Under: Journal of a Midlife Crisis
Christee Gabour Atwood

What inspired the book?A desire to laugh at myself and see if anybody else laughed along. And the fact that I had a rent payment due.

This book has also been therapy for me. I don’t like it when I see people upset by midlife experiences, when I see the lack of appreciation of elastic waistbands, and also when I see airbrushed supermodels creating unrealistic ideals of what beauty is. Writing this book has helped me put those thoughts on paper and see that I’m not the only who thinks that way.

What makes this book special to you?

This book is special because it made me realize that it’s okay to be myself and to write what I enjoy reading. I discovered that if I write something that appeals to me, at least I have an audience of one. I can build from there.

What makes this a book that other people MUST read and WHY?

People must read this or I’ll come to their houses and talk to them. Yes, be afraid. Be very afraid.

It’s also a great book for airplane trips and trips to the bathroom. Not as a toilet paper replacement, but as short format reading for the attention-challenged like myself. I get bored and trail off when…

It’s also a chance to laugh if you recognize yourself in any of these episodes. And isn’t that what makes life fun?

If laughter is the best medicine, this book replaces at least one dose of fluoxetine. (If you recognize that drug, welcome to my club. You need this book.)

What people NEED to read this book and WHY?

Everyone in the world needs to read this book. Is that too obvious?

Okay, almost everybody in the world needs to read this book. Infants can wait a few years before they pick it up. People need to read this book to help them understand friends who are going through midlife crisis, to prepare themselves for surviving it, or just to laugh at midlifers. Either way, they’ll get a laugh. Or they’ll decide they never want to sit next to me on a plane. Either one is a valuable lesson.

What sparks your creativity? Any tips to help others spark their own creativity?

You know what’s funny? I get creative when I get angry. I found that writing is my therapy. I remember coming home from a job interview and banging on my typewriter (yes, this was a while back) and complaining about the guy with seven strands of hair draped across his head who seemed more interested in doodling on his desk blotter than in my brilliant answers to questions. So I wrote and wrote and little by little the anger started getting really funny. I took the interview to the furthest extreme by describing the fellow as a superhero who only interviewed people in between saving the world from fast food drive-thru workers. From this experience, my humor column was born.

We decide our responses to situations. Anything that makes us mad can also make us laugh. We just have to flip it and take it to the extreme.

What has been the biggest stumbling block in your writing? Can you share some tips to help others get past similar problems?

The biggest stumbling block in my writing is the attachment of my rear end to a chair. I found that the answer for me was to start with short format materials.

With the attention span of an over-caffeinated gnat, it really helped to be able to sit down and write a humor column that was complete at the end of the sitting. It was those humor columns that eventually became the basis for this book.

Also, try writing the worst book you can. This really helps relieve the pressure we put on ourselves when writing. Geez, even Pavarotti had to clear his throat before he sang. Plan to write a lot of phlegm before some good words sneak onto the page.

What do you think motivates people to become authors? What motivated you to get into this unusual industry?

People become authors because they like to be abused by editors, agents, and critics. Because they feel that performance appraisals by one boss are not enough. Instead they want their work appraised by everyone, including that crotchety woman who said that no one has written a good book since Gone With The Wind. In other words, we write because we’re insane.

I became a writer because I love the thrill of creating a world and living in it while writing the story. I get depressed when the story is finished because I don’t want to leave. It’s like the darkness in the theatre when a good movie fades to black. It’s nice because you were there, but you still want more.

It’s also therapy and is a heck of a lot cheaper than a psychiatrist.

Tell me about the most unusual things you have done to promote any books?

Last year, for National Novel Writing Month, I put on a chicken suit and sat in the window of a Waldenbooks for a month, writing a novel called, “Danger, Deceit, and a Demon … named Myron”. I got some incredible press – in fact, you can even see the article on CBS News webpage at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/08/print/main2241177.shtml

I was on the national radio show, The Satellite Sisters, and other various radio shows, television shows, and possibly even made it into a junior high school newspaper, but that might have just been a rumor.

I’ve emceed a Menopause Fashion Show for a hospital. Lots of elastic in that one. I’ve done talks for anyone who would stand still – and that includes turning around in elevators and saying, “I suppose you wonder why I called this meeting.”

I’ve offered myself as a fill-in guest for any radio or TV show within driving radius on a very short turnaround time. I’ve gotten calls with “We’re taping in 30 minutes. Can you talk about something?” and I’ve done it.

After the chicken suit episode, I got a reputation and ended up hosting the Harry Potter Release Party at a mall in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Now, they’ve called me back to be Mrs. Claus and read my children’s Christmas poem to kids who’ve eaten too much candy.

I’m working on a promotion idea right now to do a “mall tour” because I can create events with malls and I can shop at the same time. Sounds like heaven to me.

I created a Girls Night Out group that met at a local bookstore and discussed our midlife adventures. We later moved to bars and liked it much better… although we tended to forget what we had talked about.

And the list goes on and on…

Why are you the BEST person to write this book? What in your background or in your research makes you qualified to do justice to this topic?

I’m living this book. I’m not the only person who could write this book. That’s what makes it special. This is a book any person can and should write about their experiences. It’s sharing these experiences that makes this time of life fun instead of frenzied, happy instead of harried, bonding instead of brooding, and other assorted alliterations…

I hope other people will read this and say, “I could do that” and turn around and write their stories. The more of this that we share, the more we’ll all realize that we’re crazy … but at least, we’re in the same boat.

If a potential reader thinks that your book wouldn't interest them, what would you say to convince them to buy? I'm thinking something better than "It’s the greatest book ever." Give me something more specific :)

Every once in a while we need to realize that there are others like us. There are other people who pretend they’re on the cell phone in the car so people in the neighboring cars won’t realize that they’re talking to themselves. Others who read the comics instead of the business section of the paper. Others who think that, if God had intended us to stay one waist size, he wouldn’t have invented elastic waistbands. This book shares those moments. It’s a great gift to remind ourselves that we’re not alone.

Also, it’s not just a book for midlifers. It helps others understand midlifers.

Why does the topic of your book interest you? Why would it interest potential readers? Give us a hook to reel in new readers.

This quiz will tell you if this book is for you:

Do you use your exercise bike as a coat rack?
Do you want to know how to look cool while searching for your car in the mall parking lot?
Do you believe people on the show Survivor could never last through 39 days in your workplace?Do you believe that cheesecake and Prozac share many of the same healing qualities?
Do you use the phrase, “I remember when none of that was here”?
Do you list your hair color as “Number 168”?
Do you believe that the birthday of Thomas Hancock, the inventor of elastic, should be a national holiday?
If you even grinned at any of those, you need to read this book…

Is there a way to tie your book topic to current events? If so, tell us about how you could do that.
I have a blog to feature information and examples about tying books into current events that might be a good place for you to promote your book.

November is National Novel Writing Month, where thousands of people worldwide will try to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. Everyone has a book in them. They just need permission to give it a shot. This is the month to do it.

I’m a Municipal Liaison in Louisiana, which means that I help writers in the state coordinate events and communication during the month.

I’ll also be writing my sequel to Three Feet Under, entitled In Celebration of Elastic Waistbands, during this month. Like I mentioned before, last year I got national attention when I wrote my novel in the window of a bookstore while wearing a chicken suit. This year I’ll be wearing elastic waistbands. Much more comfortable than a chicken suit…

If there's anything else you would like to share, this is the time and place.I believe that one of the greatest gifts we can share is laughter. And, as an added bonus, it burns calories.

My theme for life is “If I laugh at myself first, then the rest of the world is laughing with me, not at me.”

Thank you for visiting with me and in closing, give us your website address and a link to order your book.

Thank you! This has been a lot of fun and it’s kept me from hitting the refrigerator for a few minutes. That’s a good thing, because there’s just so much elastic in the world…
